This year your child has two different components to homework. Each one is a valuable piece of the puzzle to their overall learning in first grade. Thank you for reinforcing skills we are learning each day at school and making homework a priority.
- Each night students will bring a home a self selected book from a book bin that I assign. (If they are coming home with the same book it is because they aren’t trading it out or remembering which ones they read. This is their responsibility.) Have them read this book at least 2 times to help with fluency and complete an oral RETELL once they are done to help with comprehension and to make sure they understand the story. Please fill out their reading log and initial it so I know that it is done. Also, please fill in whether it was a just right book, too easy, or too challenging.
- I expect students to read EVERY night. Reading is the single most important way to help support your child this year. Your child will return their reading log every day, I will sign it, then they will bring it back home that evening. On Friday I will send home with them one or two books and they can bring it back on Monday for me to sign just like normal, and so on and so forth.
- The second component to first grade homework is their HOMEWORK PACKET. This will be a mixture of both MATH and WORD WORK. I will send packets home on MONDAY and you can return them on FRIDAY of the same week. This will allow students some flexibility on when they get it done based on what their week looks like after school each night. We also understand that the math might be a bit confusing since it looks very different than how we were taught. I will send home parent letters prior to a unit starting that describes/explains in more detail what the math looks like and how we are teaching it.
- Some homework asks you to read something with your child and there is nothing to turn in. Please just initial that it was read, I will check it in their homework folder, and send it back home for you to keep.
Students will be sent home with a new set of 25 sight words each trimester. The first trimester words are pink, second trimester words are green, and third trimester words are blue. Please have students practice their words as part of their homework practice until they can say them quickly without having to sound them out. If your child can read all of the words quickly, please have them begin working on spelling them as an extension.
